Be the Bear not the Chicken!

We are calling all brave men and women for our 7th annual Polar Plunge! We are excited to announce that there will be three Polar Plunge locations this year. Pick the location nearest to you and be a part of this statewide event.

To participate, you must collect a "bear" minimum of $50. You can register online and set up your own personal fundraising web page or download a registration form (pdf) . We hope to see you in March!

So you don't want to get wet?
Then form a team of 10 to compete in a tug of war contest at the Broken Arrow Bass Pro Shop pond or the Illinois River. Only the strong will stay dry. Each tugger is responsible for raising at least $50. Law Enforcement Agencies, Fire Departments, Power lifters and bodybuilders, private companies, colleges and the local community are all welcome to participate.

The winning teams will have bragging rights for a year and the Broken Arrow winners will be listed on the Gold Cup showcased inside Bass Pro Shop.

At the Oklahoma City Plunge there will be a Guns & Hoses Fire Truck Pull Challenge. We are calling all police agencies and fire departments to challenge one another. The can also be made up of fraternities, sororities, tactical teams, co-workers, etc. The 10 man team is responsible for raising $200 ($20 a team member). Create a fundraising page and encourage others to pledge in your honor!

What is a Polar Plunge?
A Polar Plunge is a fundraising challenge made to an individual or group challenging them to dive into a cold body of water in order to raise money for Special Olympics. Each participant collects pledges from family, friends and businesses in the hopes of raising lots of money for the local Program. Then, on a select day, they "take the plunge" in the cold water to benefit Special Olympics.

The Polar Plunge is a very popular special event among Law Enforcement Torch Run volunteers across the country. Approximately 24 Polar Plunges take place every year in 15 U.S. states, helping to raise millions of dollars for Special Olympics Programs. In 2007, Polar Plunge participants raised over $34,000 for Special Olympics Oklahoma!

Step 1:       Register

Register online or download a registration form (pdf).

Online registration helps us prepare for the Polar Plunge by letting us know how many plungers to expect; however plungers can still register for the event the day of the plunge.

Plunging as a team is much more fun than plunging alone.  Think of the pleasure you will have watching your friends or co-workers scream!  This is a great event for church groups, companies, student organizations clubs, etc.

If you are too chicken to make the plunge, show your support by making a pledge to a braver soul.

Step 2:       Collect Pledges

To plunge, you must collect a “bear” minimum of $50 in pledges.  Collect pledges from friends, neighbors, co-workers or relatives and turn them in prior to, or on the day of the plunge at the registration table.  You will receive your 2008 Polar Plunge T-shirt as a token of our appreciation.  Additional incentive prizes for pledges collected are:

     $200 - $499   Polar Plunge hat
$500 and up   Polar Plunge sweatshirt

Incentives will be given out based on pledges received up to the day of the plunge.  We try to order enough incentives to supply all plungers; however we cannot always guarantee your incentives will be on hand.  If you do not receive all your incentives the day of the plunge, they will be available for pick-up after the Plunge.

Create a personal fundraising webpage.  It only takes a few minutes and you can send the link to your friends and family asking them for donations via credit card online.  It’s simple, easy and free!  Or download a pledge form (pdf).

Step 3:       Take a Plunge

All plungers must sign a waiver the day of the Plunge.  Plungers who are under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

Prizes will be awarded for the following Plunge contests:

  • Top Fundraiser
  • Top Fundraising Group
  • Best costume
  • Oldest Plunger
  • Youngest Plunger
  • Polar Bear Truck Pull (Oklahoma City location only)
  • Polar Tug winner (Broken Arrow and Tahlequah location only)
Door prizes will also be given out to lucky winners.
