Special Olympics Oklahoma Athletes Win Medals at
2006 USA National Games

Tulsa, Okla.      July 8, 2006, Special Olympics Oklahoma athletes returned from competing in the first ever 2006 USA National Games in Ames, Iowa. The fifty-three athletes from Oklahoma brought back 23 gold medals, 20 silver medals, and 15 bronze medals.  

“This was a great experience for our athletes to not only compete but to excel on a national scale like this,” said Adrian DeWendt, Special Olympics Oklahoma Executive Director. “Thank you to everyone that helped make this trip possible!”

The Mission of Special Olympics is to provide a year-round program of sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities [mental retardation] and other closely related developmental disabilities. Thanks to Oklahomans, more than 9,200 Special Olympics athletes participate in more than 100 competitions and events on an annual basis. Competition is offered in 16 official sports.
