FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPECIAL OLYMPICS OKLAHOMA ATHLETES OF THE MONTH CHOSEN
Oklahoma Lottery, Special Olympics Oklahoma and Cox Communications Team Up to Recognize Special Olympics Athletes

Oklahoma City, OKSeptember 20, 2006Billie McLane of Claremore, Aubrey Wofford of Pryor, Adam Watts of Norman and Brett Clements of Owasso have been chosen as Athletes of the Month and honored by the Oklahoma Lottery Commission, Special Olympics Oklahoma and Cox Communications.

“The Lottery is proud to be associated with the Special Olympics.  It is a wonderful organization that brings joy to the faces of so many,” said Beverly Hughes, Oklahoma Lottery Director of Sales and Marketing. “We wanted to do something that would give more recognition to the remarkable participants and honor them for their tremendous accomplishments.”

Each Athlete of the Month receives a prize pack which includes a framed certificate, monogrammed jacket, DVD of the television spot featuring them (which runs throughout the month on Cox Cable) and a $100 Papa John’s gift card.
Billie McLane was June’s Athlete of the Month.  He has been a Special Olympics athlete for 16 years competing in Unified Softball.  McLane says, “I think Special Olympics is a lot of fun.”

McLane enjoys watching his Dukes of Hazard and Knight Ryder DVDs and working at Wal-Mart. He says his favorite Special Olympics memory is the dance which is held every year.

Aubrey Wofford was Athlete of the Month in July.  She currently attends Pryor Junior High school and is involved in basketball and track and has taken part in Special Olympics Oklahoma for three years.

Wofford was selected to compete at the 2006 Special Olympics USA National Games in Ames, IA in July where she was a member of Team Oklahoma and competed in track and field.

The August Athlete of the Month was Adam Watts.  He is a 2002 graduate of Norman North High School and has been a Special Olympics Athlete for 17 years.

“Special Olympics changes people’s lives,” said Watts. “It gives them a chance to be an athlete and compete.”

Watts spends his time working part-time in Norman and doing recreational and leisure activities.  He is a self-motivated exerciser and loves music and movies.

Brett Clements is September’s Athlete of the Month. He has been involved in Special Olympics for twenty years where he competes in the 50 meter dash, softball throw, relay, standing long jump, basketball, bowling and softball.  His favorite Special Olympics memory was last year when his relay team won first place.

“Being involved in Special Olympics helps me meet friends,” said Clements. “I would be bored and sad without it.”
Clements extracurricular activities include Challenger league baseball, T.O.P. soccer and Meals on Wheels. He has also received an achievement award from Meals on Wheels.

The Athlete of the Month program runs every month through May of 2007 with a new athlete selected each month. The individual athletes are chosen by Special Olympics Oklahoma.
